During a human-potential class many years ago, I was whining about how my (now former) wife didn't understand me, wasn't treating me right, etc. Some fellow participants called me on my crap and challenged me to write about how I really felt. This song was the result, a birthday present to her, delivered over breakfast to an audience of one. It got a pretty good review...
"Shine In This Moment" Of all the ways I learned to hurt you one stands out above the rest: The way I hammered to improve you even while you did your best. And even when you met my expectations I only shrugged and said, "OK." I wouldn't blame you for resenting me; how could a lasting love ever grow this way? When we were gathered up in each other's arms as naked as our day of birth, I looked down on you and imagined someone else, never realizing what our love was worth. And when we did not touch for many days, I wondered: should I stay or go? All my disappointments crowding in on me - I never thought of simply letting you flow. How can I shine in this moment? How can I testify my love? How will it feel at the end of our days When nothing else matters but how we have loved? Of all the ways I learned to love you one stands out above the rest: The way you handle being up against a wall; the way you always do your best.
